While waiting tables, John's actor-friend introduced him to local talent agents who were celebrating at the establishment. The agents invited to stop by their office, leading to his first big career break.

John was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Archie (S.I.U. theatre award) for his work in the play Ritual Of Steel. He appeared as a walk-on on the show My Boys, played the construction worker in Bon Jovi’s Lost Highway video. John is also featured as Frank, the spokesman for Bacon cologne.
