John played football all through grammar school and high school. He also participated in boxing, tae kwon do, and wrestling. He turned down some small scholarships to play football, opting instead to attend a University. After visiting his older brother at Southern Illinois University, his choice was made. John was "bit by the acting bug" after taking an acting class in college to fill credit hours and changed his major to theatre.

While waiting tables, John's actor-friend introduced him to local talent agents who were celebrating at the establishment. The agents invited to stop by their office, leading to his first big career break.

John was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Archie (S.I.U. theatre award) for his work in the play Ritual Of Steel. He appeared as a walk-on on the show My Boys, played the construction worker in Bon Jovi’s Lost Highway video. John is also featured as Frank, the spokesman for Bacon cologne.
